Are Testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction Related?
Of late, Urological experts and biologists have started researching and revealing the liaison between testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction (ED). But, is testosterone therapy really effective in combating the ED ailment? What do the research studies conclude? How effective is it to use testosterone to treat ED and what are the scenarios that induce the usage of this therapy to treat ED? Read ahead and get to know the details.
What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is the steroid hormone that is farmed by the testicles in men and ovaries in women which is in turn responsible for the complete development of sexual features in men.
This sexual hormone is also responsible for the prevention of osteoporosis, maintenance of muscles, general well being and sustenance of RBC count in humans.
The Possible Link between Testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction
Testosterone replacement therapy has been viewed as a possible curative measure for ED in case of men who are suffering from hypogonadism. Though hygonadism is not seen as a root cause of ED, clinical trials have insinuated that erectile dysfunction is visible in men with reduced testosterone production.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy is often taken along with the impotence medications like Viagra, Levitra and Cialis and it aims at increasing the libido and nocturnal erections. In addition to the possibility of treating ED, the therapy implicates futuristic side effects that constitute oily skin, infertility, changes in the size of testes, RBC, cholesterol and lipid levels, breast blowup and complications related to sleep. However, due to the list of associated side effects, the therapy strictly necessitates adherence to the advice of a medical practitioner.
Analysis of the Clinical Trails Involving Testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction
Ridwan Shabsigh, one of the associate professors in Urology at the Columbia University has come out with the finding that the therapy with testosterone gel relatively improves the response of the erectile to Viagra 100mg.
Compared to the intake of innocuous medications, the replacement therapy with testosterone gel showed an enhancement in orgasms and the volume of semen ejection. It also showcased the effective link between testosterone and erectile dysfunction in men who have failed to react to PDE-5 inhibitor therapy.
Medscape reports that the clinical trail carried out to reveal the liaison between testosterone and erectile dysfunction showcased an increase in erection throughout a period of 1-6 months for men treated with testosterone replacement therapy. However, the meta-analysis performed by Isidori et al in men with less that 12nmol/l showed moderate but noticeable improvement in curing ED. The most interesting factor regarding this therapy was that the baseline testosterone level was inversely proportional to the effects of treating ED.
Conclusions
Though clinical trails indicate that testosterone is moderately effective in treating ED, the efficacy of testosterone to cure ED remains mute. Even if used, the therapy needs to accompany the intake of impotence drugs.
This therapy is highly discouraged in case of patients suffering from prostate and breast cancers due to the fact that testosterone would aggravate prostate and breast cancers. As such, a medical examination of the breast, prostate and the PSA levels need to be taken before resorting to this treatment option.
